In these times we’ve managed to make it seem somewhat absurd, but the thing is that Pep Lemon is a lemon soda drink – kind of like a Fanta, a Schweppes or a Kas – simply done with some of the thousands of lemons that you can find around Mallorca, squeezing out their juice in order to make a standard product for people to drink.

When you hear Tomeu, one of the drink`s promoters, tell de story of Pep Lemon, you’re not sure if to laugh or cry: the idea came to their mind when seeing how most of the island’s lemons, from the thousands of lemon trees that are scattered throughout the island, just sat there sadly rotting without no-one to pick them. And taking into account the vicious circle that entails: the fruit drops, its acid is filtered into the soil and the trees slowly die. Pep Lemon pick, make and bottle the artisanal way. It’s proximity trade, it’s social responsibility, you can find it in all the luxury shops and hotels of the island – “people don’t pay three hundred euros for a room to find a regular Fanta in it” said Tomeu – and if you don’t hurry, you’re not even going to try it, because the little production that they yearly make is systematically sold out.

Sounds incredible, but it’s true: lemonade made with lemons.

En els temps que corren hem aconseguit que sembli una cosa gairebé absurda, però el cas és que Pep Lemon és una beguda gasosa de llimona -a l’estil d’una Fanta, una Schweppes o un Kas-, feta, senzillament, agafant les moltíssimes llimones que hi Mallorca i traient-ne el suc per fer-ne un producte estàndard que pugui beure la gent.

Quan sents explicar la història de Pep Lemon a en Tomeu, un dels seus promotors, no saps si riure o plorar: la idea els va venir del mal als ulls que els feia veure com la gran majoria de llimones de l’illa, les dels milers de llimoners que hi ha repartits arreu, es podrien a l’arbre sense que ningú els collís. Amb el cercle viciós que això comporta: la fruita cau, el seu àcid es filtra a la terra i els arbres es van morint lentament. Pep Lemon recullen, elaboren i embotellen artesanalment. És quilòmoetre zero, és responsabilitat social, pot trobar-se a tots els establiments de luxe de l’illa –la gent no paga tres-cents euros per una habitació per trobar-hi una Fanta, ens va comentar en Tomeu- i si no vas viu ni la tastes, perquè la poca producció que en fan cada temporada se’ls esgota sistemàticament.

Sembla increïble però és cert: llimonada feta amb llimones.
