Si nos paramos a pensar en buenos compositores de pop nuestra mente se dirige inevitablemente a los Kinks, Jonathan Richman o Franco Battiato, todos ellos artesanos de la inmediatez, poetas de lo cotidiano que desgranaron sus vivencias en canciones magistrales de no más de tres minutos. Si tenemos que buscar un correlativo en latitudes más cercanas y contemporáneas no hay mejor exponente que Antonia Font ¿Cuántos músicos pueden pisar el ataúd con joyas como “Calgary 88” o “Alegria” a sus espaldas? Sabemos que pocos, muy pocos. Ese talento aparece muy de tanto en tanto y las causas normalmente son peregrinas, intangibles, pertenecen al mundo de la magia. De hecho lo sobrenatural aparece en las canciones de Joan Miquel Oliver( líder y guitarrista de la banda )como algo cotidiano,con lo que convivimos diariamente sin darle demasiada importancia, de ahí su naturaleza surrealista o,como diría su mentor Jaume Sisa, “galáctica”. Antonia Font son galácticos y representan una manera muy mallorquina de entender la realidad: tomando distancia sobre los hechos, sin demasiados aspavientos y al final resolviéndolos de forma discreta pero con un toque de excentricidad.Indomables,jocosos e irónicos son los grandes posmodernos del mediterráneo. Su estrella se apagó hace un años pero el gran escalador de la banda, Joan Miquel Oliver,  sigue regalándonos discos deslumbrantes de orfebrería pop y poesía costumbrista como su último trabajo “Pegasus”.

If we try to think of good pop composers, our mind inevitably goes straight to the Kinks, Jonathan Richman or Franco Battatio, artisans of the immediacy, poets of the daily life who shelled their experiences in master songs of not more than three minutes. If we have to find a counterpart in closer contemporary latitudes, there is no better exponent Antonia Font. How many musicians can step on their coffin leaving gems like “Calgary 88” or “Alegria”? Few, very few. This kind of talent appears only very once in a while and the causes are usually outlandish, intangible and from a magical world. In fact, supernatural appears in the songs written by Joan Miquel Oliver (leader of the band and guitar) like a common thing, with which we live every day without paying much attention to it, hence its surrealistic nature or – as their mentor Jaume Sisa would say – “galactic”. Antònia Font are galactic and they represent a very Majorcan way of understanding the reality: putting some distance between them and the facts, without much fuss, and eventually solving them in a discreet but a little eccentric way. Indomitable, humorous and ironic, they are the great postmodern of the Mediterranean. Their star died a few years ago although the great climber in the band, Joan Miquel Oliver, keeps giving us dazzling pop goldsmithing and folkloric poetry-filled albums like his last job “Pegasus”.
