Cantarano

Let’s talk about serious things now: the cantarano is a must have piece of furniture in Majorcan houses. It is inherited generation to generation and don’t even think about getting rid of it, or you will forever be object of derision in your family. No kidding, a cantarano is a sign of wealth and the more you have, the better!

That’s why good children grow up singing a kind of mantra that says “you’ll never give up a good cantarano, you’ll never give up a good cantarano…” It’s in their genes.

With a French origin, a cantarano is a wooden chest of drawers that can have a marble top surface. It can be found in any room in the house, from the living areas and halls to the dining room, although it was originally placed in the bedroom. In fact, we are talking about a refined evolution of something called caixes (boxes), which were low rectangular cabinets in which bed linen and the bride’s dowry would be stored and which opened from the top. The dresser style of the cantarano makes it possible to put objects on top: usually religious decorative figures or marvellous flower sets made of seashell bits carefully displayed in a crystal bell. Wonders of the crafts that the Majorcan nobility used to love.

My friend Victòria tells that they have three cantaranos at her home – i.e. class – and each of them has a specific function depending on their style. The one in the bedroom is for the bedding clothes, the one in the living room has all sorts of homeware clothing such as table cloths, aprons, the linen… The third one is for the paperwork, yes, the family papers: scriptures, contracts, important documents and even Christmas snowflake decorations (which we call neules). We know that papers can’t be stored anywhere but in a cantarano and, if it is Elizabethan, even better. Do you understand now the importance of this piece of furniture? We keep the family legacy in it, the cultural heritage of the family.

Now, would you like to see a cantarano and you don’t have access to a Majorcan house? No problem! You just need to go for a walk around Sóller. Unlike other Majorcan villages, Sóller has this old tradition that consists in having their doors open. It is a custom that comes from the Northern Europe (keep in mind that Sóller has a merchant history). You will see that they have the doors of their houses open, shamelessly showing all their power. Halls are designed to impress and show who lives in the house. And obviously you will always find a cantarano in there, poking his head and increasing the cache of the scenography that was set to impress the guests.
